Breckenridge is Keystone's older cousin, 13 miles away.
The ski operations are about the same size. Breckenridge is a much
larger town (and the county seat). It came into the skiing era with
a strong history as a regional mining center and has been able to preserve
some of that feel despite explosive growth. The result is that Breck'
is much better known outside Colorado and rather more expensive.
Your lift ticket for Keystone Mountain is equally valid on the slopes
of Breckenridge. Breckenridge is laid out on the shoulders of 3
peaks in the Ten Mile Range: Peak 8, Peak 9 and Peak 10 (the first prospectors
were busy panning gold). If you are not familiar with the layout
of Breckenridge, best to head first for the base area of Peak 8.
Breckenridge is easily reached from Tenderfoot
Lodge via the Swan Mountain Rd on the south side of Lake Dillon, or
around the north side of the lake on US 6 and Co 9. Or take the
Ski KAB Express from Keystone to Breckenridge. Or take the Summit
Stage, if an intermediate stop in Dillon, Silverthorne or Frisco is planned.
Both depart from the shuttle staging area outside Mountain House and immediately
across the Snake from Tenderfoot Lodge.
