| The summit of Mount Royal is 1500' above Frisco, more or less
directly above Frisco. The 'Frisco Crags' below are well
known to rock climbers. Fortunately, the hiking trail proceeds at
a more leisurely pace. It follows the old muletrack through the ruins
of Masontown. The miners and buildings are long gone.
Then a harder scramble up to the ridgeline top. From the top
you are looking down into Tenmile Canyon. Tiny cars and trucks travel
I-70 far below. This is probably the highest such observation post
in the whole Interstate system.
The best trailhead is from the parking lot established at the bottom
of the Tenmile Canyon National Recreational Path near the Frisco exit
of I-70. Follow the bikeway east to the Masontown trailhead.
The trail is on the backside of the Mt. Royal with respect to I-70.
