When the trail starts at 12,000 ft you don't have do much climbing
to get an excellent view! The route follows the Continental Divide
along a wide ridgeline for about 1.5 miles. One can see down into
the valley of the Snake River in Summit County and the Clear Creek Gulch
on the eastern side of the Divide. The careful eye can spot four major
ski slopes from a single vantage point: Arapahoe Basin, Keystone Mountain,
Breckenridge, and Loveland Valley. However, one cannot see Keystone
nor Tenderfoot Lodge. The Snake has carved its valley too deeply.
Park your car at the pullout at the top of the Pass. Stay
on the worn paths and off the delicate tundra. If the wind exceeds
your tolerance, proceed no further. The prevailing westerlies will
only get worse as the vista opens up to the western side of the continent.
