The Blue Lakes Rd climbs through the Monte Cristo mining district
and ends at Upper Blue Lake. But the miners needed to go even higher
and this trail follows their track to the Golden Beaver Mine. After
a brief and somewhat disorganized scramble near the lake, the trail is clearly
visible. This area is well known for its alpine flora in the early summer.
The sharp needles of Quandry Peak loom overhead the ruins of the miners'
cabins. Landslides have left the mine area itself pretty disorganized.
The classic view of banded Wheeler Peak reflected in the Upper Blue
is actually seen from the dam right at the trailhead. The trail proceeds
from the north end of the dam.
