Golfing in Summit County |
| Mountainous Summit County still has enough room for four regulation
golf courses. Duffers need to be able to keep their eye on the ball.
The scenery beyond every fairway is very distracting. And the ball carries differently at 9,000+ feet. The thinner air means less drag. Less drag should mean longer drives and less hooking and slicing. But watch out for the elevation changes. You are at the top of the Rockies. |
| The Keystone Ranch is home to 18 holes of world class
golf designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. LINKS Magazine rated it one
of the top 50 "Must-Play" golf courses in the world. Very, very much in
demand. Book early, (970) 496-4250. The historic ranch clubhouse
is 2 mi from Tenderfoot Lodge. Keystone now sports a second golfing opportunity, River Course. The full 18 holes by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry openned in 2000. Until the word gets out, this may be an easier course to get onto. (970) 496-4444. Their brand new clubhouse is 1.5 mi from Tenderfoot Lodge. |
|
| Breckenridge has the only municipally-owned course designed by Jack
Nicklaus in the country. (970) 453-9104. The clubhouse is about
12 mi from Tenderfoot Lodge.
The course at Silverthorne has been completely rebuilt by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry with PGA pro Tom Lehman consulting. Intrawest is calling the new course, "The Raven at Three Peaks". 2001 will mark its first full season. The clubhouse is about 8 mi from Tenderfoot Lodge. Copper Mountain has its Copper Creek course back in full use after some ski lift construction. The layout was done by Pete and Perry Dye. (970) 968-2339. The highest golf course in North America is just over Fremont Pass in Leadville. The Mount Massive Golf Course is limited to nine holes but totally boundless in altitude bragging rights. (719) 486-1536. |
