| Summit County currently has over 80 miles of paved bikeways.
Most of this network is physically separated from the vehicular roadways.
Included are the Tenmile Canyon National Recreation Trail, the Blue River
Bikeway, and the Vail Pass Bikeway. You get the drift -- Summit County
is very serious about cycling. It perfectly complements the earlier
emphasis on winter sports.
Try to find a copy of the free Summit County Bike Trail Guide. Published annually, it is up-to-date on the continuous extensions being made to the county's paved trail system. The easy 12 miles from Keystone to Frisco is surely one of the most scenic rides in the US. Most of the path follows the shoreline of Lake Dillon and virtually all of it is physically isolated from the roadways. The ups and downs are short ones. Lake Dillon can also be circum-navigated but this requires sharing the steep and winding Swan Mountain Road with vehicular traffic. Best to do this section early in the morning and return via the bikeway. The Blue River Bikeway covers the 9 miles from Frisco to Breckenridge. The Tenmile Canyon National Recreation Trail follows the rather narrow defile that separates the Gore Range and the Tenmile Range from Frisco to Copper Mountain. The scenery is Rocky Mountain rugged. The bikeway is not, gaining about 600 ft in elevation in a steady climb over a distance of 6 miles. No time, this time? Get behind a slow-moving truck
on the Interstate in Tenmile Canyon. Pretend you are on two wheels
on the National Recreational Trail nearby. Take in the vertical
space. Finally, blow past that 18-wheeler when you're just beyond
Copper Mountain. Pray for the next time. Mountain BikingAll this is not to mention the unparalleled opportunities for mountain biking. That's a whole 'nuther sport!RentalsYourbike didn't make it over those high passes into Summit County?Bicycles and cycling equipment are available for hourly or longer rental at several locations in the County.
